Workshop that carries on the tradition of Awa indigo dyeing
Until the early Meiji period, Awa indigo was renowned throughout Japan. Its high quality, nurtured by the fertile soil of the Yoshino River basin, led to a distinction between Tokushima-grown indigo (hon-ai) and indigo from other regions (ji-ai).
At the Ruafu indigo dyeing workshop, we carry on ancient traditions, producing authentic indigo dyes using Tokushima-grown indigo dye (“sukumo”) fermented with natural lye.
Experience firsthand the beautiful texture of “living indigo,” imbued with the powerful, unrestrained energy of nature.
